Young librarians learn about significant electronic resources on the history of Russian architecture

On June 15 the Vereshchagin Library received participants in the project "University of Young Librarians". More than 60 specialists from Vologda, Cheliabinsk, Belgorod, Murmansk, Kostroma, Arkhangelsk, Yaroslavl, Moscow and Leningrad regions participated in the seminar, organized by the Vologda Regional Universal Scientific Library with the support of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Vologda Region, the Russian State Youth Library and the Youth Section of the Russian Library Association.

The young librarians were especially interested in the meeting with American professor William Brumfield, who acquainted them with accessible resources on the history of Russian architecture. These resources are useful both for specialists studying architectural heritage and for anyone interested in the history and culture of Russia.

Among the most extensive electronic resources on the architectural heritage of Russia, the professor noted the site http://cultinfo.ru/brumfield, which is part of the site cultinfo.ru «Culture in the Vologda Region» .

He also noted the site http://temples.ru/william_brumfield.php, part of the project temples.ru «Храмы России», which contains a large volume of materials on Orthodox and Old Believer churches in Russia, including those destroyed and those preserved to our day. From the main page of that site it is possible to go the open research project "The Heritage of S. M. Prokudin-Gorskii. William Brumfield has widely publicized the work of S. M. Prokudin-Gorskii, a Russian scientist and photographer at the beginning of the 20th century, whose unique collection of color photographs is preserved in the Library of Congress in Washington.

In addition to the above, a series of Professor Brumfield's articles on the architectural heritage of various Russian towns is accessible under the title "Discovering Russia" https://www.rbth.com/special/discovering_russia at the site of the international multi-media project "Russia beyond the Headlines" (part of "Russia Today").

The participants of the seminar warmly characterized the American lecturer as "Kind, gracious, engaged with the material, open for discussion, an "enchanted wanderer". Now the young librarians can recommend to their readers-researchers and amateurs of Russian history and culture-these electronic resources on the architectural heritage of Russia.
